Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School

Summary:

Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, with a student population of 410. The school has a diverse student body, with 45.37% African American and 45.85% Hispanic students, as well as smaller percentages of other racial/ethnic groups.

Academically, Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School has consistently underperformed compared to state and district averages on New York state assessments. For example, in 2022-2023, the school's 3rd grade proficiency rates were 23.08% in English Language Arts and 21.95% in math, significantly lower than the state averages of 44.89% and 53.68%, respectively, and the New York City Geographic District #3 averages of 66.36% and 65.61%. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as English Language Learners and students with disabilities. As a result, Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of New York elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

Compared to nearby public and charter schools in the Harlem area, such as Sisulu-Walker Charter School Of Harlem, Success Academy Charter School-Harlem 4, and Harlem Village Academy West 2 Charter School, Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School generally underperforms academically. These nearby schools have significantly higher academic performance and rankings, suggesting that Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School may need to learn from their successful practices. Additionally, the school's high percentage of low-income students (88.05% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) may present unique challenges, but the school's diverse student population and focus on language instruction could also be leveraged as strengths if the school is able to effectively address the needs of its student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school and fallen hard and very fast. They Hebrew is no longer immersive. The school cannot keep teachers or heads of school. Most of the kids are from outside of Manhattan as the administration has completely alienated the local community. Your kids will not get a proper education here. Many kids in 2nd, 3rd grades cannot even read. There is a reading specialist but parents whose children are struggling don't even know who she is. Children are only given 10 to 15 minutes to eat their lunch. The ones with an IEP are not given the support they need so behavioral issues are rampant. Classroom management is an enormous problem for this school. Many kids curse and hit teachers and students and rarely if ever get suspended or disciplined. The administration is constantly lying to parents and go to great lengths to cover up scandal. If they put half the effort into educating our kids properly and creating a safe environment in which they can learn effectively they wouldn't have the numerous lawsuits they have against them. Do not send your children to this school. You will be doing them a great disservice and will come to regret it. Close Quote

Open Quote Harlem Hebrew is an outstanding K-6 Grade Charter school.
The School program include:

Two hours of reading and writing each day and one hour of math.
Modern Hebrew, Israel studies, Science, social studies, art, music, physical education and chess. Personalized computer learning, a new rooftop playground.
After school programs.
my son attends the school and we are very happy with the school.
Our son was enrolled in a private school previously and I must say that his development at this school on all levels were extraordinary!
It is a wonderful school with AMAZING Teachers and hard working staff. The kids get to learn Hebrew with Israeli teachers and also get to learn about Israel’s history, music, food, custms and culture, In fact each class name is called by Israeli towns. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
