Is 381

Summary:

Is 381 is a public middle school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 291 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #22, which is ranked 468 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Is 381 has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York middle schools, with mixed performance on state assessments. While 8th-grade ELA scores are above the district and state averages, 6th and 7th-grade ELA scores, as well as 6th and 8th-grade math scores, are below the district and state. However, the school performs well on Regents exams, with high proficiency rates in Living Environment, Algebra I, and U.S. History and Government. The school's diverse student population, with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, may contribute to the academic challenges it faces.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Junior High School 78 Roy H Mann, Middle School 890, and Junior High School 278 Marine Park, which generally perform better on state assessments, Is 381 outperforms the nearby Andries Hudde school on several metrics, including Regents exam proficiency rates. With its relatively small class sizes and diverse student population, Is 381 has the potential to implement more personalized learning strategies and targeted interventions to address its academic gaps, particularly in math.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a senior in I.S 381! this school SUCKS! The teachers treat the kids ( except for the 6 graders since they are new) with no respect. They curse and scream at them. Don't get me wrong some of the times these students need it, but the teachers don't have to curse while they are yelling at us ( not all the teachers do it...) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
