Harlem Link Charter School

Summary:

Harlem Link Charter School is an elementary school located in New York City, serving grades PK-7 with a total enrollment of 364 students. The school is part of the Harlem Link Charter School District, which is ranked 623 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Harlem Link Charter School has consistently underperformed compared to the state average on the New York State Assessments, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math below the state average across all grade levels. The school's performance has varied across different student subgroups, with African American students and English Language Learners performing relatively well, but male students, special education students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds performing weaker. Despite the school's high spending per student, its student-teacher ratio is higher than the state average, suggesting that the school may not be effectively utilizing its resources.

Nearby schools in the Harlem area show a wide range of performance, with some, like Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem and PS 171 Patrick Henry, consistently achieving high academic success, while others, like Locke School of Arts and Engineering and Mosaic Preparatory Academy, have struggled to meet state standards. The challenges faced by Harlem Link Charter School and many of the nearby schools may be attributed to the high percentage of students from low-income families in the area, suggesting that socioeconomic factors play a significant role in academic performance. However, the school's recent improvements in ranking and rating, as well as its strengths in serving certain student subgroups, indicate that there may be opportunities for Harlem Link Charter School to enhance its overall effectiveness and better support the needs of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son is a part of the 2010 alumni at Harlem Link. While attending, the school went out of its way to form a sense of community with the students and the surrounding neighborhood. The teachers and staff developed a wonderful rapport with parents, they listened to and addressed concerns, and they continued to follow the success of my son well after he graduated. The learning was very hands on and interactive, and they strive for a more intimate learning experience. Every year we're in communication with them--they want to know how the students are doing--they hold alumni nights and invite the older students to welcome new students and advise about the middle school, high school, and even the college application progress. I am so touched by how much they continue to reach out long after graduation. I am also proud to say that my son recently won top prize for a scholarship for college that was issued through an essay program Harlem Link extended to their alumni. Very rewarding and encouraging. This goes to show the lengths that they go through to follow up with their graduates. It's not just a school, but a great community of people who genuinely have their pupils' best interest at heart. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
