Ps 43

Summary:

PS 43 is an elementary school located in Far Rockaway, New York, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 668 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #27, which is ranked 582 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

PS 43 consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of New York elementary schools, with a statewide ranking between 1950-2333 out of around 2,400 schools over the past 10 years. The school struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively, ranking in the bottom quartile for female, male, and Hispanic students, and in the bottom half for African American and English Language Learner students. Its performance for students with special needs and those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds is also in the bottom quartile. Despite spending a relatively high amount per student, ranging from $17,821 to $22,040 over the past 4 years, this does not translate to improved academic outcomes.

The nearby schools in the same district, such as PS/Middle School 42 R Vernam, PS 197 Ocean School, PS 104 Bays Water, and PS 105 Bay School, also perform poorly, suggesting that the challenges faced by PS 43 are not unique and may be systemic within the district. However, the success of local charter schools, such as Peninsula Preparatory Academy and Success Academy Charter School-Far Rockaway, which significantly outperform PS 43 and the district on state assessments, demonstrates that high-performing educational options are possible in the Far Rockaway area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is dangerous and they cover up bullying. My child went there from Prek to 5th grade. He just got into a middle school down the road. I wish I would have transferred him earlier. Instead of coming home depressed he now comes home happy and excited about learning. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
