Ps 17 Henry D Woodworth

Summary:

Ps 17 Henry D Woodworth is an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 202 students. The school faces significant challenges in improving the academic performance of its predominantly Hispanic and low-income student population.

PS 17 has a high percentage of Hispanic students (84.16%) and a large proportion of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (78.22% receive free or reduced-price lunch). The school's academic performance, as measured by state assessments, is generally lower than the district and state averages, with only 38.1% of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 53.58% in the district and 44.89% statewide. The school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with English Language Learner and Special Education students performing relatively well, but male students, Hispanic students, and students from low-income families struggling.

Comparing PS 17 to nearby schools, such as PS 132 Conselyea School and PS 31 Samuel F Dupont, which perform significantly better, and the high-performing Success Academy Charter School-Williamsburg, highlights the potential for improvement at PS 17. The school's high spending per student ($30,604) and low student-teacher ratio (10.7) suggest that additional resources and support may be needed to address the academic needs of its students. However, the school's declining statewide ranking over the past several years is a concerning trend that warrants further investigation and targeted interventions to reverse the decline.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child loves this school, the teachers are amazing and offer lots of their time to help if my son needs extra help with maths and spelling, the science and art classes are really interesting, I'm hearing about lots of fun things that keep the kids interested and wanting to learn. There is a really good amount of time for gym and the school lunches are pretty good, Dr Marchi and the rest of the staff are really concerned with improving the quality of school life and I LOVE that the entrance door ladies are so protective of the kids.. you cant go in without signing in and having ID, no matter who you are..!!!! they are awesome guards! The library is full to the brim with great books which he brings home and he never complains that the computers are not available...plenty for all the students!! ALL in all, I love this school and encourage parents to join the community they've set up

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
