Ps 111 Jacob Blackwell

Summary:

PS 111 Jacob Blackwell is an elementary school located in Long Island City, New York, serving grades PK-8 with 397 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #30, which is ranked 415 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's high spending per student, ranging from $24,867 to $32,710 over the past four years, PS 111 Jacob Blackwell consistently performs significantly below the New York City District #30 and New York state averages on state assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The school ranks in the bottom 10% of New York elementary schools, with a ranking between 1638 and 2345 out of over 2,400 schools over the past 10 years. Additionally, PS 111 Jacob Blackwell struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively, ranking in the bottom 25% of New York elementary schools for African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

In comparison, the nearby schools in the same district, such as PS 166 Henry Gradstein and PS 171 Peter G Van Alst, significantly outperform PS 111 Jacob Blackwell on state assessments in both ELA and Math, with higher proficiency rates and better rankings. The high percentage of students from low-income families, the large population of English Language Learners and Special Education students, and the school's overall low ranking suggest that PS 111 Jacob Blackwell may be facing significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, and targeted interventions and support are needed to address these issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to this school the year it was opened in 1949 with my twin brother. I am now 72. I cannot believe the test scores! How can this school be allowed to be open? I have submitted a review this last school year. I do not see it, or the other very nice reviews from other parents. Obviously they are unaware of what is going on academically. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
