Ps 82 Hammond

Summary:

PS 82 Hammond is an elementary school located in Jamaica, New York, serving 582 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #28, which is ranked 429 out of 865 districts in the state.

PS 82 Hammond has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates across grades 3-5. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 25%, compared to 50.37% for the district and 42.6% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low for Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students, who rank in the bottom 30-40% of their respective student groups statewide. Additionally, PS 82 Hammond has a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 77.7% to 88.21% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as PS 182 Samantha Smith, PS 86, and PS 54 Hillside, generally perform better than PS 82 Hammond on state assessments, with higher proficiency rates in ELA and Math. Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and high per-student spending, PS 82 Hammond continues to struggle, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of the school community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The new art teacher Ms. Quevez was really excellent. My child couldn’t stop talking about her and the projects he was excited to do. They used a lot of different things like paint, and even aluminum foil. I haven’t seen my son use paint in school even when he was in kindergarten! She also did this class every Friday which my 1st grader loved! She was so excited on Fridays and couldn’t wait. She learned a lot about cultures, and places around the world and about things like that which I think is very important. My kids were excited to go back in person this year. I hope she’s there again this year. The other teachers are very nice as well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
