Bushwick Community High School

Summary:

Bushwick Community High School is a small public high school in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades 9-12 and part of the New York City Geographic District #32, which is ranked 764 out of 865 districts in the state.

Bushwick Community High School faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of New York high schools over the past few years. The school's academic performance is generally below district and state averages, with proficiency rates ranging from around 20-60% across different subject areas. Its four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 79-85%, which is below the state average, and the school has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.1% to 83.7% in recent years. The school serves a predominantly minority student population, with a large majority (81.4-88.17%) coming from low-socioeconomic status backgrounds.

While Bushwick Community High School has relatively high per-student spending and a low student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, these factors alone do not seem to be driving improved outcomes. The school's performance lags behind many of its nearby counterparts, such as Bushwick Leaders High School for Academic Excellence and Ebc High School for Public Service-Bushwick, which have slightly higher academic performance, graduation rates, and lower chronic absenteeism. Addressing the root causes of Bushwick Community High School's challenges will likely require a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I don't know why people are giving this school such a low rating. This school has been through a lot but It has prepared a lot of students who other wise would not have gotten second chance in life on the road to college, I say this being a former student. I have never seen such dedicated teachers and staff. The students they teach are former high school dropouts like myself and they help them get their high school diplomas not G.E.D. If a person has something negative to say about this school it's probably because they never attended the school, if anything these teachers actually care for the students Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
