Brooklyn Academy Of Science And The Environment

Summary:

Brooklyn Academy Of Science And The Environment is a public high school serving 265 students in grades 9-12 in Brooklyn, New York. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #17, which is ranked 636 out of 865 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school faces significant challenges, ranking in the bottom quarter of New York high schools and earning a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is performing below average compared to other high schools in the state. While the school performs better for African American and Special Education students, it struggles with Hispanic and English Language Learner students, ranking in the bottom quarter for these subgroups. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 78.6% and 85.1% in recent years, below the state average, and it has a high dropout rate ranging from 4.9% to 10%. Additionally, the school has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.1% to 48.8%.

Nearby schools like Medgar Evers College Preparatory School and Clara Barton High School generally outperform Brooklyn Academy Of Science And The Environment on key metrics, but they also face challenges with high chronic absenteeism and low performance for certain student subgroups. The school's high percentage of students (over 80%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch suggests it serves a predominantly low-income population, which likely contributes to the school's challenges. While the school's per-student spending has increased over the years, its performance has not seen a corresponding improvement, indicating that simply increasing funding may not be enough to address the underlying issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Very nice school but you need a real website and occasional open houses. You also need to make sure you focus on other subjects besides science, for example, math, social studies, and english language arts. You should also add more languages to learn, for example, sign language, french, and italian. I'm not sure if you have gym but you should. You should have more sports for both girls and boys. You also need more clubs and offer more partnerships. When I looked your school up it said it was a regular school but your very much lagging in regular school qualities. If you do have any of the stuff I typed in your school, you should probably list it in the brooklyn public high schools book. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
