Middle School 61 Dr Gladstone H Atwell

Summary:

Middle School 61 Dr Gladstone H Atwell is a public middle school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 361 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #17, which is ranked 614 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Middle School 61 has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (82.83%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 54.55% to 83.33% African American. Academically, the school's performance on state assessments is generally lower than the district and state averages, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math below average across all grade levels. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York middle schools, placing it in the bottom third statewide. However, the school's African American and Hispanic student subgroups perform relatively better compared to their peers in the district and state.

Despite the school's overall challenges, there are some interesting findings. The school's enrollment has decreased slightly over the past few years, but its spending per student has increased significantly, from $17,028 in 2019-2020 to $26,427 in 2022-2023. Additionally, the school's student-teacher ratio has improved from 14.2 in 2020-2021 to 9.3 in 2022-2023, indicating a lower student-teacher ratio and potentially more individualized attention for students. While Middle School 61's performance is generally below average, some of the nearby schools, such as Ebbets Field Middle School and School Of Integrated Learning (The), also struggle academically, suggesting that the challenges faced by Middle School 61 may be reflective of broader issues within the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The years 1977 and 2009 is a long way off. Things have changed in this school. If you examine the demographics of the school's population, children come from as far away as Queens. Atwell is a full uniform school, the new principal has pushed an established accelerated program schoolwide ! This new principal arrived at the school in November of 2009, changes began IMMEDIATELY (for the better). Check out Atwell for the school year 2012-2013, you will TRULY be surprised. Also look at insideschools.org for the school's review. Close Quote

Open Quote I think more attention should be paid to the students. The office staff is very unaware of what is going on within the school. Many times I as a parent have called to find out information partaining to 8th grade students the office staff is never aware of what is going on. I have been bounced around to many other people or have been disconnected. Whoever reads this e-mail (hopefully it's the principal) would address this matter. Close Quote

Open Quote I attended for one year...9/76-6/77. Then we moved to East Flatbush. Back then, there were a lot of fights/violent acts among the students. I hated walking in the halls because some of the boys would touch girls inappropriately and yell rude remarks at us. I remember walking back to class from the girls bathroom and being followed by a boy who tried to force himself on me in a stairwell...I slammed him with my bag and ran. That year, there were a few walk outs and days when most of the teachers and students were absent because the teachers, parents, and school board couldn't agree on policies (I guess...can't remember what the 'disagreements' were about). Just seemed that the place was always out of control and the teachers and principal just looked the other way. Probably the least productive school year I ever had. I hope things are better there now? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
