Brooklyn Frontiers High School

Summary:

Brooklyn Frontiers High School is a public high school serving 145 students in grades 9-12 in Brooklyn, New York, which is part of the New York City Geographic District #15. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of New York high schools and received low ratings from SchoolDigger, indicating significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students.

The school's performance has been highly inconsistent, with fluctuating graduation rates ranging from 27.7% to 85.1% and dropout rates ranging from 4.9% to 26.3% over the past 5 years. Additionally, the school has extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.1% to 90.4%, which are significantly higher than the district and state averages. While the school has outperformed the district and state in some subject areas, such as U.S. History and Government, its proficiency rates on Regents/Common Core exams are generally lower than the district and state averages across most subject areas. The school's performance also varies significantly across student subgroups, with male students, African American students, and special education students tending to perform better than female students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Cobble Hill School of American Studies, Brooklyn Frontiers High School generally underperforms on most metrics, including graduation rates, test scores, and chronic absenteeism. However, the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $25,386 to $37,320 over the past 4 years, suggests that resource allocation may not be the primary driver of the school's performance challenges. Other factors, such as instructional quality, school climate, and student support services, may be more significant contributors to the school's struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have never found a more understanding and amazing group of professionals who actually care to help the child starting from a social emotional place which in turn makes them thrive on their academics. the small classrooms are very adaptive and helpful for kids who may benefit from small groups. I am forever thankful. They have treated my child as a human being not as a number who produces grades. Their model should be duplicated in every borough for the needs this city has for our kids struggling and stuck in placements that do not benefit them or help them and instead pushes them to feel as if they are horrible because they cannot adapt to the educational system. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
