Restoration Academy

Summary:

Restoration Academy is a public middle school located in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 94 students. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 71.28% African American, 17.02% Hispanic, and 7.45% Asian.

Restoration Academy's academic performance is significantly lower than the district and state averages. In the 2022-2023 school year, only 26.92% of 6th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 47.09% in the district and 45.82% statewide. In math, the proficiency rates were even lower, with only 11.54% of 6th-graders, 0% of 7th-graders, and 9.09% of 8th-graders meeting or exceeding the standards. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of New York middle schools, with a ranking of 1351 out of 1500 schools in the 2022-2023 school year. Restoration Academy's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as male students and students with low socioeconomic status.

When comparing Restoration Academy to other nearby middle schools, such as Middle School 35 Stephen Decatur, it becomes clear that the school is underperforming its peers. Middle School 35 Stephen Decatur, located just 0.6 miles away, outperformed Restoration Academy across multiple subject areas and grade levels, with significantly higher proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Math. Despite Restoration Academy's relatively high per-student spending of $41,704 in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools, the increased funding does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes for the students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Do not be fooled by pretty new pictures and paint, this school is a pipeline to prison now the old principal left and its been one bad joke after another one. There are afew teachers and counselors who care about kids but the paras are off the street and so is that principal. I would say stay away from the district all together because they know whats going on in here and dont do anything. I hope Adams just merges this school with the elementary that principal at 93 seems to have some sense. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
