Bronx Health Sciences High School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, student engagement, and socioeconomic factors. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New York high schools, with proficiency rates ranging from 11.11% to 82.93% across different Regents exams. It performs particularly poorly in subjects like Algebra I, Algebra II, and Chemistry. The school's diverse student population includes 48.37% African American and 37.77% Hispanic students, and over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a low-income student population. Interestingly, the nearby schools in the same district, such as Bronx High School For Writing And Communication Arts and Bronx Lab School, have similar performance characteristics to Bronx Health Sciences High School.

Despite these challenges, Bronx Health Sciences High School has maintained a high 4-year graduation rate, ranging from 95.3% to 100% over the past 5 years. However, it also has a 0% dropout rate, indicating that students who do not graduate may be retained or transferred to other schools. The school's chronic absenteeism rate is also very high, with over 50% of students missing 10% or more of the school year, which likely contributes to the overall academic struggles. While the school's spending per student has increased in recent years, this has not yet translated into improved academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote i am at this school at the moment and i am telling you if you are going to apply to this school DONT! i read some reviews online about how this school was bad and also read some that said this school is the best school you should go to. all the things they wrote in the highschool books are a lie. there are no extra curricular activities in-between classes and gym is super super early . in gym the only choice you have to get your credits is to walk four laps around the basement where the gym is or play basketball so girls dont really have a choice in gym unless your a girl who likes to play basketball. the rules for the bathroom are ridiculous. there are about 7 or 8 stalls in the bathroom but only two can go at a time , so the bathroom lines are extremely long. they keep the bathrooms locked so kids cant use i without permission even at lunch they make you wait in line and when you finally get to use the bathroom they make sign the bathroom log . the school is small truman has assess to every part of the school and bhs only has half of the third floor the other half is for truman special ed kids. the teachers are very strict and they are very disrepectful especially the algebra teacher. i should have listned to the warnings about this school and im warning you if you are going to apply for the school DONT!!!!!!!!!!! if i could give this school zero stars i would but i cant because this site wont let me Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
