High School For Contemporary Arts

Summary:

High School For Contemporary Arts is a small public high school serving grades 9-12 in the Bronx, New York, with a student population of 283 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school faces significant challenges, ranking among the lowest-performing high schools in the state with consistently low academic performance, high dropout rates, and chronic absenteeism issues.

Despite having the highest per-student spending ($26,674) and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 9.5 among the nearby schools analyzed, High School For Contemporary Arts struggles to translate this additional funding and smaller class sizes into improved academic outcomes. The school's proficiency rates on Regents exams are significantly below the district and state averages, with only 13.83% proficient in Algebra I, 0% in Chemistry and Algebra II, and less than 50% proficient in English, Global History, and Living Environment. Additionally, the school has a high dropout rate of 13% and a four-year graduation rate that has fluctuated between 77% and 89.2%, lower than the state average.

When compared to other nearby schools in New York City Geographic District #11, the stark contrast in academic performance is evident. For example, New World High School, located just 1 mile away, has proficiency rates on Regents exams that are 20-40 percentage points higher than High School For Contemporary Arts. Similarly, Bronxwood Preparatory Academy and Academy-Scholarship & Entrepreneurship have higher graduation rates and lower dropout rates than High School For Contemporary Arts, suggesting that factors beyond just funding and class size may be contributing to the school's struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a student who used to go there, recently, that school was terrible. No students were motivated, none of the faculty such as the guidance counselors or even the office staff made any attempts to motivate their responsibility resulting in many students who lost respect for the school as a whole and skipped constantly. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
