Ps 83 Donald Hertz has a relatively high per-student spending of $17,189 in 2022-2023 and a low student-teacher ratio of 14.3, which may contribute to its academic success. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and English Language Learners presents both challenges and opportunities for targeted interventions and support to further improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The worst school. Unwelcoming, rude office staff, rude teachers, rude principal who is a narcissist who has the parent coordinator and staff write positive Google reviews under aliases and "flag" negative ones. He encourages and is complicit in staff targeting parents (anyone who disagrees is a "troublemaker") who don't fall for his fakeness. He gets away with a lot of crap because his buddy works at the DOE (the current rating is a joke considering how poorly the kids are doing on exams. Guess it's about who ya know!) and his homeboy is on the community board. Exaggerates how well the school is doing on state exams. A minimal amount of students get into a specialized high school. Allows staff to discuss their personal politics with students including letting Stella Kontolios (the Trump supporter) conduct an assignment where student's were encouraged to say vile things about the Little Rock Nine. There's no Spanish, Albanian or Arabic speaking office staff at the school. God help your children if they go here and ain't white or Italian because all "Brandon Moo" cares about is the Colombus Day parade, office furniture and his Mickey Mouse Prada shoes. Beware of your kid's safety. He doesn't like suspending kids because it makes the school rating go down. He doesn't like the police called because the school rating goes down. Only a handful of decent teachers are left. He's driven out the decent ones. Beware of his henchwoman AP who will lie to your face and put kids at risk all in the name of protecting Moo. Can you really trust a grown man who lets his staff call him by a cow's sound?? Close Quote

Open Quote We just moved to the area last summer and my children attended PS 83 this year. They had an amazing experience. They were given extra help if they were having difficulties and there were so many programs for the students. If I could give more stars, I would. I've read reviews from other sites and I believe those individuals want to complain about something. Kudos to the principal and staff for making my family feel welcome. I am of Italian-Dominican descent and my husband was born in Yemen. My children never felt excluded based on their culture because this school is full of different ethnicities. I have nothing but positive things to say about PS 83. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
