International School For Liberal Arts

Summary:

The International School For Liberal Arts is a public high school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades 6-12 with a total enrollment of 469 students. It is part of the New York City Geographic District #10, which is ranked 715 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, with proficiency rates on state assessments and Regents exams significantly lower than the district and state averages across most subject areas and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math for grades 6-8 were around 20-30%, compared to the district's 32-43% and the state's 44-51%. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 63.6% and 85.6% over the past few years, which is generally lower than the district and state averages, and its dropout rate has ranged from 4.3% to 11.3%, which is higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, the school has experienced high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 34.1% to 81.0% in recent years, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Despite its proximity to several high-performing schools, including Bronx High School Of Science (The), High School Of American Studies At Lehman College, and Celia Cruz Bronx High School Of Music (The), the International School For Liberal Arts has struggled to achieve outcomes comparable to its peers. The school spends a relatively high amount per student, ranging from $17,597 to $22,223 per year, which is higher than the district and state averages, but this does not seem to translate into improved academic outcomes. The school's challenges may be attributed to the high concentration of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with 88.61% to 98.29% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
