Ps 11 Highbridge

Summary:

PS 11 Highbridge is an elementary school in the Bronx, New York, serving 426 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 20% of New York elementary schools and underperforming on state assessments compared to the district and state averages.

One key differentiator is the school's student population, which is predominantly Hispanic (69.25%) and African American (28.4%), with an extremely high rate of students from low-income families (92.35% to 95.54% free and reduced lunch recipients). This suggests that PS 11 Highbridge may be facing challenges related to equity and access to resources. In comparison, nearby charter schools like KIPP NYC Washington Heights Academy and Bronx Academy of Promise generally outperform PS 11 Highbridge on state assessments, despite serving similar student populations.

The school's low ranking within its New York City Geographic District #9, which is ranked 755 out of 866 districts in the state, indicates that factors such as socioeconomic status, access to resources, and community support may be contributing to the school's academic challenges. Addressing these issues will likely require a multifaceted approach that addresses the unique needs of the school's student population and community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I worked at this school as an ATR for one year and rate this school and principal E. Hachar and her APs as excellent. The school has added fifth grade for 2010-2011, which may not be reflected in other internet informational pages. Staff development for teachers is excellent, after school and Saturday programs provide additional support for students. The school has two separate buildings, a K-1 and a 2-5. it is located near the historic Highbridge, the famed footbridge between Manhattan and the Bronx (which is now under restoration). The bridge entry area has a charming little park next to it, walking distance from the school.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
