Westchester Square Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of New York high schools over the past decade, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school struggles to effectively serve certain student subgroups, such as Asian, White, and Special Education students, though it performs better for African American and English Language Learner students. Graduation rates have fluctuated between 70.4% and 91.1%, below the state average, and dropout rates have been high, ranging from 3.5% to 11.0% in recent years. Additionally, the school has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.1% to 61.2%, significantly above state and district averages.

Westchester Square Academy's academic performance on Regents/Common Core exams is generally below state and district averages across most subject areas, with particularly low proficiency rates in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Living Environment. The school's challenges are further compounded by the similar struggles of nearby schools in the same district, such as Gotham Collaborative High School, Bronx Community High School, and Antonia Pantoja Preparatory Academy, which also have low proficiency rates, high chronic absenteeism, and poor graduation outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I've visited many schools as a teaching artist and this is by far the most dangerous, unkempt school I have worked in. The teacher turnover is extraordinarily high as they lost around 40 teachers last year in April and teachers are very discouraged, scared and live in fear not only of the bullying, inept administration but even some students. Most students just want to get along and get a good education but fear and loathing of the principal run deep and are worsening as she is ineffectual and does not listen to their needs and wants. I feel very sorry for the student body and even some teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
