Ps 146 Edward Collins

Summary:

PS 146 Edward Collins is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 314 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #8, which is ranked 742 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

PS 146 Edward Collins faces significant challenges in serving its predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student population. The school has a higher percentage of Hispanic (57.64%) and African American (33.44%) students compared to nearby schools, such as PS 130 Abram Stevens Hewitt and PS 140 Eagle School (The). Academically, PS 146 Edward Collins consistently underperforms compared to the district and the state in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency, with only 23.68% of 3rd graders, 33.33% of 4th graders, and 12.5% of 5th graders proficient or better in ELA. The school also struggles to support its student subgroups, including female students, male students, English Language Learners, and students with special needs.

Despite the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (94.27% receive free or reduced-price lunch), PS 146 Edward Collins spends significantly more per student ($22,721 in 2022-2023) compared to the state average, suggesting that additional funding and resources alone may not be the sole solution to improving academic outcomes. The school's performance has steadily declined over the past decade, with its statewide ranking dropping from 1739 out of 2413 New York elementary schools in 2018-2019 to 2090 out of 2439 in 2022-2023. However, the school's relatively stronger performance for homeless students indicates that it may be providing effective support for this vulnerable population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Parents, do yourselves a favor and keep your children out of this school. It is absolutely horrifying how they change your kids and turn them into monsters. The school in general is a mess and very dirty. The staff is the most disorganized and rude that I have encountered in my experience. They do whatever they want, whenever they want - and that includes - schedules, to lunch breaks, to changing your child's teacher around. Teachers are constantly yelling at the students for no aparent reason. If they have a problem with one student, they make it a point to take it out on all others. They want everything easy and when they can't have it that way, they make it seem as the child is the problem. They are so backwards with their teaching techiques. If you appreciate your child and want a decent education (which is what all children deserve), then please DO NOT SEND THEM TO THIS SCHOOL. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
