Muscota

Summary:

Muscota is an exceptional elementary school located in New York City's District 6, serving 248 students in grades K-5. This high-performing school has consistently ranked among the top elementary schools in New York, earning a statewide ranking of 262 out of 2,445 schools and a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Muscota's academic performance is truly remarkable, significantly outperforming the district and state averages in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, 68.57% of Muscota's 3rd and 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to just 38.87% and 39.58% for the district, respectively. In math, Muscota's 3rd and 4th graders had proficiency rates of 86.11% and 86.67%, far exceeding the district's 46.05% and 50.23%. Muscota's performance is particularly strong for male, white, and special education students, ranking among the top 10% of New York elementary schools for these subgroups.

While Muscota's academic excellence is impressive, the surrounding schools in District 6 generally struggle, with lower test scores, higher poverty rates, and lower spending per student. This highlights the significant disparities in educational opportunities within the same district. Muscota's higher spending per student, at around $20,000-$22,000 in recent years, may contribute to its strong academic outcomes, suggesting the importance of adequate funding and resource allocation in supporting student success. Overall, Muscota stands out as a model of educational excellence, effectively serving a diverse student population and providing a quality education that sets it apart from the more challenged schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Muscota does a really good job of integrating great music, dance, and art programs, while still offering the best techniques in teaching reading & math. They also give good advice on developing these skills at home.

We definitely feel supported by the school staff, and parents are constantly being encouraged to be involved.

It is only our second year here, but we have been really happy with how our child is growing and learning at Muscota. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
