Professor Juan Bosch Public School

Summary:

Professor Juan Bosch Public School is an elementary school located in New York, NY, serving 231 students in grades KG-5. It is part of the New York City Geographic District #6, which is ranked 609 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its district's low ranking, Professor Juan Bosch Public School consistently outperforms both the district and the state of New York in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates across grades 3-5. In 2023-2024, the school's 4th grade ELA proficiency rate was 80.65%, compared to 44.04% for the district and 47.05% for the state. Its 5th grade Math proficiency rate was 69.7%, compared to 46.25% for the district and 48.93% for the state. The school's performance for Special Education students is particularly strong, ranking 174 out of 2,110 New York elementary schools in 2023-2024 (5-star rating). However, the school faces challenges in comparison to nearby high-performing charter schools like Success Academy Charter School - Washington Heights and Zeta Charter School - Inwood, which significantly outperform Professor Juan Bosch Public School in both ELA and Math proficiency.

Professor Juan Bosch Public School has a high percentage of Hispanic students and a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 76.19% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and increased per-student spending suggest that it is investing resources to support its unique student population. While the school's performance has been somewhat inconsistent, with a dip in 2021-2022 followed by a rebound, its strong results for Special Education students indicate that it is effectively supporting its most vulnerable learners.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Professor Juan Bosch School (PS 178) Is a lovely, modern and progressive school. They offer Dual language, ICT, NEST and Monolingual programs. PS 178 works to meet the child where they are, by creating a supportive and collaborative environment. It was built as a K-2 school, despite expanding to 5th grade it still has the small and warm feeling. It is very much like a family, where every child is known by their name. Parents are as welcome as the children! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
