Ps 189

Summary:

PS 189 is an elementary school located in New York City's District 6, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 453 students. While the school has been consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools, it has a unique profile that sets it apart from its nearby counterparts.

PS 189 faces significant challenges due to its high concentration of economically disadvantaged students, with over 94% of its students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. However, the school's performance for certain student subgroups, such as English Language Learners (ELLs) and Special Education students, is relatively stronger, with higher rankings compared to other New York elementary schools. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, PS 189 ranked 265th out of 1066 New York elementary schools for ELL students and 337th out of 2110 schools for Special Education students. This suggests that the school may be effectively targeting the needs of these specific populations.

The contrast between PS 189's performance and that of the nearby Zeta Charter School - Inwood, which significantly outperforms the district and state averages, highlights the potential impact of school choice and alternative educational models in serving disadvantaged communities. Additionally, PS 189's higher funding and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools could be a reflection of the school's efforts to support its high-needs student population. While PS 189 faces significant challenges, it appears to be making efforts to address the needs of its students, and further analysis of its strategies could provide valuable insights for serving economically disadvantaged students in urban settings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Had to switch my child out of this school. Great principals, main person in front office is kinda rude, intimidating, and unwelcoming. Counselor intimidated my child. Some staff seem to not care for the students or the parents some will completely walk away, ignore you, or become rude with you. . Academically behind. Some do not watch children leaving they let everyone out all at once and it's hard to keep up with the children if they have gone home to their parents or if they are just left outside. Many times my child was out with his friends when they should have been inside the office waiting to be picked up. Bullying is apparent some kids have a potty mouth (parents need to cut that out of them).. Lots of homework which isn't good and bad. Outdated school for sure need more decor. Twice the juice and food in the morning was spoiled. Some teachers won't give recess or enough breakfast time. Some teachers will embarrass a child to make a point. Not good! I saw it walking by twice and my child experienced it as well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
