Ps 36 Margaret Douglas

Summary:

Ps 36 Margaret Douglas is an elementary school located in New York City's District 5, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 268 students. While the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools over the past decade, there are some interesting insights to consider.

Academically, Ps 36 Margaret Douglas generally performs below the New York City District 5 and statewide averages on state assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. However, the school's 5th grade Science proficiency rate is higher than the district and state averages. The school's performance is relatively better for its Hispanic student population, as well as for English Language Learners and Special Education students, compared to the overall school ranking. In contrast, the school's rankings for Female, Male, and Low Socioeconomic Status students are all in the bottom half of New York elementary schools.

Interestingly, Ps 36 Margaret Douglas has a nearby high-performing counterpart, Ps 125 Ralph Bunche, which ranks in the top 15% of New York elementary schools. Additionally, the KIPP Star College Prep Charter School, while not in the same district, outperforms Ps 36 Margaret Douglas across multiple academic measures. Despite these challenges, the school's relatively strong performance for its Hispanic and English Language Learner students suggests that there may be opportunities to apply successful strategies to other student subgroups, and the significant increase in per-student spending over the past few years indicates a commitment to improving the school's resources and support for students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The Special Education Program, in my opinion, is good at that school. My child improved in his reading and have jumped from a grade three reading level to an eighth -grade level in an academic year. Parents need to get involved in their children's education and don't rely heavily on the teachers to work miracles. Safety is also great at the school. I just need to see more resources pooled into music dance, visual arts, drama, technology etc. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
