Open Quote Humanities Prep is a caring and a very intellectual environment. It was founded on seven core values, which students value and the school honors in many ways: academic and behavioral awards, valedictory selection, even course content revolves around them. These core values have been so inspiring that when James Baldwin School opened in the image of Humanities Prep, it too featured that same core values (which can be viewed on the HPA Website. My child received excellent education there. The teachers are enlightened, hard working, and they get to know the students very well. My son originally attended one of NYC's specialized schools where he felt alienated and misunderstood. He definitely had problems, not all of them attributable to his former school. But Prep was able to bring him back to life.

The school is not perfect: the building is terrible; there's a scarcity of after- school activities; and though the classes are thoughtful and discussion/activity based (especially in the humanities, they could assign more rigorous homework. HOWEVER, this is compensated for by their graduation requirement (PBATs), which have the students doing very college-like research and writing! Close Quote
