Open Quote Humanities Prep is a caring and a very intellectual environment. It was founded on seven core values, which students value and the school honors in many ways: academic and behavioral awards, valedictory selection, even course content revolves around them. These core values have been so inspiring that when James Baldwin School opened in the image of Humanities Prep, it too featured that same core values (which can be viewed on the HPA Website. My child received excellent education there. The teachers are enlightened, hard working, and they get to know the students very well. My son originally attended one of NYC's specialized schools where he felt alienated and misunderstood. He definitely had problems, not all of them attributable to his former school. But Prep was able to bring him back to life.

The school is not perfect: the building is terrible; there's a scarcity of after- school activities; and though the classes are thoughtful and discussion/activity based (especially in the humanities, they could assign more rigorous homework. HOWEVER, this is compensated for by their graduation requirement (PBATs), which have the students doing very college-like research and writing! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
