Earth School

Summary:

Earth School is a public elementary school in New York City's New York City Geographic District # 1, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 217. The school has had a fluctuating performance over the years, with its statewide ranking ranging from 518 out of 2,345 New York elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 2,075 out of 2,413 in 2018-2019.

Earth School's 3rd-grade English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency rate of 71.43% in 2023-2024 is significantly higher than the New York City District 1 average of 60.08% and the statewide average of 42.6%. However, the school's proficiency rates decline in higher grades, with 5th-grade ELA proficiency at only 28.57%, compared to 52.22% for District 1 and 43.68% statewide. In mathematics, Earth School's 3rd-grade proficiency rate of 50% is lower than the District 1 average of 63.47% and the state average of 53.93%. The school also has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 60.83% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

Nearby schools, such as PS 64 Robert Simon and PS 15 Roberto Clemente, have similar demographic and socioeconomic profiles to Earth School, but their academic performance is generally higher. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Earth School to learn from the practices and strategies of its higher-performing neighbors. Despite the increase in spending per student at Earth School, the school's academic performance has not shown a corresponding improvement, raising questions about the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Not understanding the low rating for this truly excellent progressive school. Perhaps because some of the school population opts out of standardized testing?
Incredibly dedicated teachers here. Our child tested into g&t programs, but we chose this school instead because of its community and values and educators. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
