East Side Community School

Summary:

East Side Community School is a public magnet high school serving grades 6-12 in New York City's District 1, with 700 students located in the East Village neighborhood. The school has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking, ranging from a high of 75th out of 1,255 New York high schools in 2015-2016 to a low of 646th out of 1,210 in 2017-2018, and its current district rank is 488 out of 865 in New York, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

East Side Community School faces several challenges, including inconsistent academic performance, high chronic absenteeism, and serving a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population. The school's graduation rates have fluctuated significantly in recent years, ranging from a low of 71.3% to a high of 97.8% in 2022-2023. Dropout rates have also varied, from 0.0% to 10.0% in 2021-2022. The school's performance on state assessments is mixed, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts ranging from 40.74% to 64.29% and in Math from 36.07% to 57.14%, generally lagging behind the district and state averages. Nearby schools in District 2, such as Gramercy Arts High School and Harvey Milk High School, generally perform better than East Side Community School on key metrics like graduation rates and test scores. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at East Side Community School, ranging from 66.29% to 67.16%, suggests that the school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged population, which may contribute to the challenges it faces. Addressing attendance and engagement should be a top priority for the school, as its chronic absenteeism rates are much higher than the district and state averages, ranging from 19.0% to 54.2% in recent years.

Open Quote I go to ESCHS, and I can personally say this is a really good school! The teachers are amazing and classes are run smoothly. You don't even need high grades to get in! I believe you need a 3-3.5 average to get in. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
