Bell Rex Elementary School

Summary:

Bell Rex Elementary School is a public elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada, serving 591 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Clark County School District, which is ranked 7th out of 13 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Bell Rex Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Nevada elementary schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 228 and 356 out of around 380 schools.

Key insights about Bell Rex Elementary School include its significantly higher percentage of minority students compared to nearby schools, with 53.98% Hispanic and 26.06% African American students. The school also consistently underperforms the Clark County and Nevada averages on standardized tests, with only 16.7% of students proficient or better in Math and 21.8% proficient in Reading. Additionally, Bell Rex has had a 100% free/reduced lunch rate for the past three school years, indicating that the student population comes from low-income households. Despite spending more per student than the state average, the school is still underperforming, raising questions about how the resources are being allocated.

In comparison, nearby schools like Odyssey Charter Schools K-5 and Wasden Howard Elementary have significantly better academic performance and more diverse student demographics. Addressing the challenges faced by Bell Rex Elementary will require a comprehensive approach that addresses the school's resource allocation, teaching practices, and support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is great. I understand that some will stay away due to the low ranking but remember that this is in a lower income area and that may contribute to the rankings. The staff is friendly and caring they go out of their way. They are taking great strides to improve this school as well. I have no issue sending my child to this school and think its one of the best elementary schools I have dealt with. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
