Garside Frank F Junior High School

Summary:

Garside Frank F Junior High School is a public middle school in Las Vegas, Nevada, serving 1,079 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Clark County School District, which is the 7th ranked district out of 13 in the state and is rated 3 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Garside Frank F Junior High School consistently performs significantly below the Clark County and Nevada state averages in standardized test scores for mathematics, reading, and science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 8.4% of Garside students were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 30.1% in Clark County and 32.6% statewide. Similarly, the school's reading proficiency rate of 21.2% was much lower than the county (39.3%) and state (41.3%) averages. As a result, Garside Frank F Junior High School has consistently ranked in the bottom third of Nevada middle schools, with a ranking between 133-148 out of 153 schools in the most recent years, and has received a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is one of the lowest-performing schools in the state.

The nearby schools, such as Guinn Kenny C Middle School, Becker Ernest Middle School, and Johnson Walter Junior High School Academy of Int'l Studies, generally perform much better academically than Garside Frank F Junior High School. These schools have higher test scores, better rankings, and more diverse student populations, suggesting that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to Garside's underperformance. Additionally, Garside Frank F Junior High School has an extremely high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 100% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which may present unique challenges in addressing the needs of the school's student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to Garside from ¹969 to 1972. I played baritone horn in the band. Our teacher was Dennis Figura, who went on to become a salesman at the Volvo dealership. I also played on the tennis team for one or two years and our coach was Mr Jensen. We had these white shirts that said Garside gladiators and had red and blue stripes on the sleeve cuffs. I'm going to bet that nobody has a picture of those. Close Quote

Open Quote The ONE review written here is a GROSS exaggeration, and a complete distortion of reality. There is not "one major fight" every day as stated by the only reviewer to comment here. Teachers are NOT just there for the paycheck, and to state otherwise is insulting and ignorant. There are many fine teachers at Garside, and several have given up lucrative careers in order to teach the MANY DISADVANTAGED AND AT RISK STUDENTS in attendance. One of the largest issues for teachers, staff, and administration is the lack of parental involvement and parental apathy. Approximately 40+ of the student population are English Language Learners which puts an incredible strain on teachers to teach children who not only do not know English, but are also below grade level when tested in their native language. Yes, the school issues iPads. Many parents do little to ensure that iPads are appropriately used in the home for educational purposes, and allow students to use the iPads for gaming. Also, many parents have been documented to take the iPads for their own personal use, leaving the child struggling to complete assignments in class. This is the 21st century, and students must become proficient at using technology if they are to become successful contributors to society. Many parents do not participate in the "at home" aspects of their students' learning, leaving the teacher in many cases, as the primary (or sole) role model in matters pertaining to education. Please dig deeper into Garside before believing this biased, and discriminatory review. There is more than meets the eye. Talk to the teachers. Talk to the principal. Teachers do not take up this profession for "paychecks." They aren't that big. Compared to those living in the area, the "check" may seem large to some, but get REAL! Teachers don't do this for the money. We do it for the betterment of the greater society at large. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter went to this school. It is a mistake to send your child/children to this school. There is at least one major fight a day amongst the students. It is completely out of control. There are some decent teachers there, but truth be told they are just there to earn a paycheck. It truly reminds me of the schools that you see in the gang movies from Hollywood. If your little one in a brawler then this is the school to send them to! Oh, I almost forgot, this school also issues iPads to the students. So rest assured as your child is walking home he/she is walking with a $400 price tag in their backpack. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
