White Mountain Elementary's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science, is generally lower than the state and district averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates were 33% in ELA, 31% in Mathematics, and 24% in Science, compared to the Ruidoso district averages of 40%, 27%, and 34%, respectively, and the New Mexico state averages of 39%, 25%, and 36%. Compared to the nearby Capitan Elementary School, which is in a different district, White Mountain Elementary's academic performance is significantly lower, with Capitan Elementary's proficiency rates in 2023-2024 being 59% in ELA, 36% in Mathematics, and 53% in Science.

The school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with relatively lower performance for female, male, and Hispanic students compared to the state. The school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance. The school's student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14 to 17.8 students per teacher, is lower than the nearby Sierra Vista Primary School (14 students per teacher) and Capitan Elementary School (12 students per teacher), but the school's overall performance suggests a need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child has attended this school for two years and after careful consideration I will now be homeschooling. Homeschooling is something I never thought I would consider. This is the only public school option in Ruidoso and the only other is a private religious school which I would not allow him to attend. The lack of creativity and almost constant testing have made my child hate learning which has had a huge impact on our lives. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
