Turquoise Trail Charter School

Summary:

Turquoise Trail Charter School is a public charter school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, serving 677 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Turquoise Trail Charter School District, which is ranked 98 out of 119 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Turquoise Trail Charter School has struggled in recent years, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (36%), Mathematics (13%), and Science (16%) consistently below the state averages of 39%, 25%, and 36%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly low among subgroups, ranking in the bottom quartile of New Mexico elementary schools for female, male, Hispanic, and White students. However, the school's performance for English Language Learners and Special Education students has been slightly better, though still below the state average. Interestingly, the school's free and reduced-price lunch rates have declined from 51.65% in 2020-2021 to 30.43% in 2022-2023, suggesting a potential shift in the school's demographic composition.

Compared to nearby public schools in the Santa Fe district, Turquoise Trail Charter School's academic performance is generally lower. For example, Chaparral Elementary and El Dorado Community School both outperformed Turquoise Trail Charter School in ELA, Math, and Science proficiency rates. While most nearby schools struggled academically, El Dorado Community School stood out as an exceptional performer, ranking among the top 20 elementary schools in the state. This suggests that high-quality public education is possible in the Santa Fe area, even if it is not the norm. The high rates of free and reduced-price lunch recipients at the nearby public schools (all above 47%) also suggest that the Turquoise Trail Charter School community may face significant socioeconomic challenges, which could be a contributing factor to the school's academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This was supposed to be a shining star of Santa Fe schools. The reality beneath the surface is very different and ugly as can be.

The school is mismanaged from the top down. Bullying is deliberately ignored by the administration, in favor of a politically acceptable facade. Classes are understaffed to the point of being dangerous.

I truly believe my kid has lost ground academically by being at TTCS. Someone is going to get seriously hurt in that environment, and the admin will point their finger at everyone but themselves. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
