The Great Academy

Summary:

The Great Academy is a public charter high school located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving grades 6-12 with a total enrollment of 127 students. Despite being part of the The Great Academy District, which is ranked 115 out of 119 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger, the school has faced significant challenges in providing a high-quality education for its diverse student population.

The Great Academy's performance has been inconsistent, with its statewide ranking fluctuating from 75th out of 185 high schools in 2015-2016 to 167th out of 190 high schools in the most recent 2023-2024 school year, placing it in the bottom half of New Mexico high schools. The school's struggles are particularly evident in its performance among female, Hispanic, and low-socioeconomic status students, who consistently rank in the bottom half or bottom third of the state. Additionally, the school's four-year graduation rates have been inconsistent, ranging from a low of 42% in 2021-2022 to a high of 76.7% in 2022-2023, significantly lower than the state's average graduation rate.

When compared to nearby public high schools, such as Sandia High, Nex Gen Academy, and La Cueva High, The Great Academy significantly underperforms in terms of statewide rankings, academic achievement, and graduation rates. This suggests a need for the school to review its educational strategies and support systems to better address the needs of its diverse student body and improve overall outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I've had a few months since disenrolling my child from The Great Academy to really think about what it is that they are failing at so miserably at over there. First, let me start by explaining their classroom setting for those that are unfamiliar. Most classes are held in a computer lab (for 6th grade, every single class is on the computer). Each student works individually using an online curriculum. They are expected to self-teach. During orientation, they claimed to have a teacher in the classroom available to help as the students need it. However, in my experience, the teacher in the classroom was very rarely able to help academically. They are mostly there to just police the children, make sure they are sitting correctly, and not talking to anyone. This environment is NOT conducive to learning, especially for middle school where they are being introduced to a lot of new concepts like algebra and hardcore grammar. After each self-taught lesson, there is a quiz or test and if the student does not score at least a 70, they are forced to go back and do the whole lesson again and again until they pass. Do they get any extra help if they struggle with a lesson? The school will tell you yes, but the reality is a horrific, resounding NO. Students truly fend for themselves at this school and as a result quickly fall behind. Their normal school week is Monday-Thursday. Friday is a half day and students only attend Friday school if they are behind. They are understaffed on Fridays because attendance is supposed to be sparse. However, at least 75 of my child's class attended Friday school every single week. If you visit their website, watch their youtube videos, or speak to the Dean, you will hear all about how the school system in America has not changed since the 40's, it has not kept up with the times. They claim their their school is a revolution in education and was developed for the modern age. I do not know where they get off claiming such a thing because if you hear the Dean (who is VERY full of himself) speak, he has no problem stating the unimportance of socializing and fun for students. He'll brag that they don't waste time with assemblies or extra curricular activities. I guess that's fine as long as the classroom is at least interesting, fun, and engaging. But, no. It is not. This school literally and purposefully sucks the fun right out of education. I can not think of a worse eduction model. They claim they are preparing kids for a career. How? This school needs to be shut down. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
