Taft Middle

Summary:

Taft Middle is a public middle school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving 292 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Albuquerque school district, which is ranked 89 out of 119 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Taft Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New Mexico middle schools over the past several years, with a current ranking of 180 out of 235 middle schools in the state.

Taft Middle's academic performance is significantly below the state and district averages across all subject areas. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 35% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, 9% in Mathematics, and 15% in Science, compared to the state averages of 39%, 25%, and 36%, respectively. The school's performance varies greatly among different student subgroups, with the school ranking highly for its African American students (17th out of 55 schools) but much lower for its Hispanic (155th out of 206 schools) and White (143rd out of 181 schools) students. Taft Middle also struggles with its English Language Learner and Special Education student populations.

Despite its challenges, Taft Middle has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.8 to 14.8 students per teacher over the past three years, which is lower than the ratios of many nearby schools like Cleveland Middle, James Monroe Middle, and Washington Middle. This suggests that the school has the potential to provide more personalized attention and support to its students, which could help improve its academic outcomes if paired with targeted interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote if you care about your students future, I do NOT recommend this school. Principles have NO time to talk to concerned parents, a teacher (I will not mention a name) talks about personal life instead of teaching,& hands out work right before the bell rings and the homework load is extremely heavy (5 hrs.) worth. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
