Matheson Park Elementary

Summary:

Matheson Park Elementary is a public elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 192 students. The school is part of the Albuquerque school district, which is ranked 89 out of 119 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Matheson Park Elementary consistently underperforms the Albuquerque and New Mexico state averages in proficiency rates for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science across all grades. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Matheson Park Elementary had only 27% of students proficient or better in ELA, compared to 39% for Albuquerque and the state. In Mathematics, Matheson Park had only 11% proficient or better, while Albuquerque and the state had 24% and 25%, respectively. The school also struggles to serve its student subgroups effectively, ranking low for female, male, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students compared to other New Mexico elementary schools.

Matheson Park Elementary performs significantly worse than the nearby high-performing S.Y. Jackson Elementary, which ranked 8th out of 433 New Mexico elementary schools in 2023-2024 and had much higher proficiency rates. Other nearby schools, such as Chelwood Elementary, McCollum Elementary, and Bellehaven Elementary, also outperform Matheson Park Elementary on test scores and overall school rankings. The high percentage of students from low-income families at Matheson Park Elementary, as evidenced by the 100% free and reduced lunch rate, likely contributes to the school's academic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is absolutely terrible. There is an average of 30 students in each class. My son had 9 teachers in 4 years that he attended there. This was due to absolutely no fault of his own. If this is the school you are supposed to go to, TRANSFER. There are SO many issues there. My child was miserable and learned hardly anything. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
