Lew Wallace Elementary

Summary:

Lew Wallace Elementary is a public elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving 177 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Albuquerque Public Schools district, which is ranked 78 out of 119 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lew Wallace Elementary has consistently underperformed compared to state and district averages in standardized test scores, with only 28% of students proficient or better in Language Arts, 11% in Mathematics, and 46% in Science in the 2022-2023 school year. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, male students, and students of low socioeconomic status, all of whom rank in the bottom half of New Mexico elementary schools. However, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.2 to 12.2 students per teacher, and a 100% free and reduced lunch rate, indicating that all of its students come from low-income families.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Longfellow Elementary, which is only 0.74 miles away, Lew Wallace Elementary consistently underperforms in academic measures. The school's performance has also declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 168th out of 421 schools in 2014-2015 to 296th out of 435 schools in 2022-2023. The high percentage of students from low-income families and the school's location in a historically underserved area of Albuquerque may be contributing factors to its academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
