Bel-Air Elementary

Summary:

Bel-Air Elementary is a public elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving 252 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Albuquerque School District, which is ranked 89 out of 119 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bel-Air Elementary consistently performs below the Albuquerque and New Mexico state averages in standardized test scores across all subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 25% of Bel-Air students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 39% for Albuquerque and the state. In Mathematics, the proficiency rate was just 12%, compared to 24% for Albuquerque and 25% for the state. The school also struggles to support its diverse student population, with rankings for subgroups like female students, male students, Hispanic students, and low socioeconomic status students all in the bottom quarter of New Mexico elementary schools. Bel-Air Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New Mexico elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years.

Despite the school's challenges, Bel-Air Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 8.8 to 11.4 over the past few years, which is lower than the nearby schools like New Mexico International School and Desert Willow Family School. These nearby schools, which are also part of the Albuquerque School District, consistently outperform Bel-Air Elementary in academic achievement, school rankings, and student subgroup performance. The high percentage of students from low-income backgrounds and the school's low ranking within the district may suggest that Bel-Air Elementary faces significant challenges in terms of resources, funding, and support for its students and teachers.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the most horrible excuse for a learning environment i have ever seen in my 50+ years of life. The principal there Hannah is the worst Leader I have ever witnessed. Instead of creating an environment of togetherness and one amongst the teachers she talks behind teachers backs and shares confidential information from teachers to her click of teachers. She adds no value or provides any support to teachers and does not address issues in a timely manner. This school might stand a chance of redemption if someone with courage and a backbone would be brought in to save this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
