Armijo Elementary

Summary:

Armijo Elementary is a public elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 249 students. Unfortunately, this school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with proficiency rates well below the state and district averages in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science.

Armijo Elementary struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 10-15% of New Mexico elementary schools for female, male, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status (SES) students. This is likely due to the school's 100% free and reduced-price lunch rate, indicating that all of its students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. However, the school does have a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.7 to 13.9 students per teacher over the past three school years, which could be an advantage in providing more individualized attention to students.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Coronado Elementary and Albuquerque Collegiate Charter School, Armijo Elementary's academic performance is significantly lower. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Coronado Elementary had 50% of students proficient or better in ELA, compared to only 12% at Armijo. Unfortunately, Armijo Elementary's ranking and performance have remained consistently low over the past several years, with no significant improvements observed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child has attended Armijo elementary since kindergarten and now I have my youngest there too. I gotta say its been a rollercoaster ride with so many changes with the principals, but overall its a good school my children have learned a lot. Mr. Saiz and Miss Sosa are amazing teachers and the front office staff are so sweet and helpful. The nurse Marcela is wonderful. The only inconvenience is the parking its hectic to pick up and drop off my kids. But we are happy and satisfied they really help my kids academically. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
