West Orange High School

Summary:

West Orange High School is a public high school serving 2,151 students in grades 9-12 in West Orange, New Jersey, which is part of the Verona Public School District. While the school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools like Livingston High School, its academic performance, as measured by state test scores, is generally lower. However, West Orange High School performs relatively well for certain student subgroups, such as African American students and English Language Learners.

West Orange High School has a four-year graduation rate ranging from 88.2% to 91.5% in recent years, which is lower than some nearby high-performing schools like Glen Ridge High School (99.3%) and Livingston High School (98.5%). The school has also experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 14.4% in 2016-2017 to 25.6% in 2021-2022, which is much higher than the rates at many nearby schools.

Despite these challenges, West Orange High School's diverse student population and relatively strong performance for certain subgroups suggest that there may be opportunities to build on the school's strengths and address areas for improvement. The close proximity of West Orange High School to more affluent and higher-performing schools highlights the importance of addressing equity and access to quality education for all students, regardless of their background.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Poor overall performance, overcrowded facilities, hallways are deafeningly loud, student body is generally unruly. Motivated students will succeed in any school system but WOHS does little to motivate the others. Close Quote

Open Quote My son attends 10th grade at WOHS. I was not happy with the idea of him going to a public school with negative reviews posted all over.

After two years, I have changed my mind dramatically, the teachers are absolutely fantastic and they strive for the students to reach their full potential. My son loves school, engages with the teachers and has outlined his career path.

His friends are excellent boys, intelligent and honorable.

The school diversity makes it a real world environment, so when he goes to college he will be used to all kinds of people.

Bottom line, don't let any of the negative postings discourage you from having your child attend WOHS. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
