Orchard Valley Middle School

Summary:

Orchard Valley Middle School is a public middle school located in Sewell, New Jersey, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 489. The school is part of the Washington Township School District, which is ranked 327 out of 615 districts in New Jersey and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Orchard Valley Middle School has a higher percentage of White students compared to surrounding schools, it faces some challenges. The school has seen a steady increase in chronic absenteeism, and its test scores, particularly in mathematics, are generally lower than state and district averages. However, the school stands out for its high proficiency rates in Algebra I, with 78.3% of 8th-grade students scoring proficient or better, significantly higher than the state average of 66%. When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Chestnut Ridge Middle School and Bunker Hill Middle School, Orchard Valley Middle School generally performs on par or slightly below its counterparts in the Washington Township School District.

To improve, Orchard Valley Middle School may need to focus on addressing achievement gaps, improving overall academic outcomes, and exploring best practices from its higher-performing counterparts in the region. The school's declining statewide ranking and significant differences in performance across student subgroups suggest that the school may need to prioritize addressing these areas to better serve its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was sexually harassed at this school. I wasn’t the only one to make a complaint about this person to the principal and vice principal. It happened more than once and they did nothing about it. They moved his locker away from mine and moved his homeroom, that was it. There was no internal suspension for him, there was no detention for him, and there was was no suspension for him. I hated this school. Thank god I switched to private school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
