H W Mountz Elementary School

Summary:

H W Mountz Elementary School is a public school in Spring Lake, New Jersey, serving 152 students in grades PK-8 and part of the highly-ranked Spring Lake Borough School District.

H W Mountz Elementary is an exceptional school, consistently ranking among the top 3-202 elementary schools in New Jersey over the past decade. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school ranked 77th out of 1,342 elementary schools statewide and received a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's students excel academically, with 80% or more proficient or better in English Language Arts and 54.5-100% proficient or better in Mathematics, far surpassing the state averages. H W Mountz also has very low chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 2-5% in recent years, compared to higher rates at nearby schools like Shark River Hills Elementary (18.9%) and Belmar Elementary (14.2%).

However, H W Mountz Elementary has a predominantly white student population, over 96% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the racial diversity of nearby schools like Shark River Hills Elementary (60% white) and Bradley Beach Elementary (30.73% white). While the school's academic excellence is commendable, this racial homogeneity may present challenges in addressing the needs of a more diverse student body. Additionally, the school spends $25,190 per student, higher than the state average and many surrounding schools, which raises questions about the effective use of these additional resources.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A Blue Ribbon school consistently among the top schools in the state. Extended PreK, after school care and enrichment are offered. Unique after school cultural enrichment available at nearby Community House with dancing, singing and acting lessons for preK to 12 grade. Parents/PTA, Board and administration work together for continual improvement and academic excellence.Small class size and experienced, enthusiastic teachers maintain an orderly school where learning takes place. Limited numbers of out of district tuition students are admitted. Close Quote

Open Quote H. W. Mountz School has cutting edge curriculum and outstanding teachers. The schools utilizes state of the art equipment for the teachers and the students. The staff are extremely gifted at finding creative ways to enhance the education of our children. For years I paid and sent my children to private school, I am sorry that I did not take full advantage of the resources that were available to me. My child has increased her proficiency in both math and english. Her reading comprehension and writing skills have also improved dramatically. We have a corporative parent/teacher rapport and a board that cares about the education of our children. I have only good things to say about our experience! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
