Red Bank Middle School

Summary:

Red Bank Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 4-8 in the Red Bank Borough Public School District in New Jersey, with a student population of 601 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school has a predominantly Hispanic (85.86%) and low-income student population, which contrasts significantly with the nearby schools like Frank Antonides School, Bayshore Middle School, and Forrestdale School, which have much lower percentages of Hispanic and low-income students.

Academically, Red Bank Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New Jersey middle schools over the past decade, with a 2-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science on the NJSLA assessments are significantly lower than the state averages across all grade levels. However, the school's Algebra I proficiency rates are remarkably high, significantly exceeding the state average. Additionally, the school has seen a steady increase in chronic absenteeism rates, which may be contributing to its academic challenges.

The data reveals significant socioeconomic and racial disparities between Red Bank Middle School and the nearby schools, which likely contribute to the academic performance gaps observed. While the school's strong Algebra I performance is a bright spot, addressing the overall academic struggles and the increasing chronic absenteeism rates will be crucial for improving the educational outcomes for the predominantly Hispanic and low-income student population at Red Bank Middle School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I'm proud to live in a town with such an outstanding school district. As a member of the Red Bank Borough Education Foundation, I constantly witness the dedication of the school administration and staff to the children of Red Bank. And the results are clear. In 2019, the district was one of 11 in the state to receive the prestigious distinction of Lighthouse District by NJDOE, an honor which recognizes substantial academic improvement. Also last year, the district was designated as a "High Performance District" by NJDOE. Close Quote

Open Quote Two of my three children attend the RBMS. The quality of the teachers is EXTREMELY high, my children come home year over year with a huge uptick in their abilities. There is real involvement by the teachers to make classes and learning engaging - across all subjects. The teachers are the central source for learning, but we also have strong community partnerships that afford us access to arts, writing, music and sports. The kids are from hard-working families that respect authority, qualities that we as parents instill in our children. We couldn't be happier. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
