Anthony V. Ceres Elementary School

Summary:

Anthony V. Ceres Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 487 students in grades K-4 in the predominantly Hispanic community of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. While the school shares similarities with nearby schools in terms of student demographics, it stands out with its consistently low academic performance, high chronic absenteeism rates, and a student population that is predominantly from low-income families.

The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics, is significantly lower than the Perth Amboy Public School District and the state of New Jersey averages. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 14% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 20.8% for the district and 42% for the state. This trend has persisted over the past decade, with the school consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of New Jersey elementary schools. The achievement gap between Anthony V. Ceres Elementary School and the state/district appears to be widening, suggesting the need for targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.

Another area of concern is the school's high chronic absenteeism rate, which has increased from 2.5% in 2017-2018 to 22% in 2021-2022, significantly higher than the nearby schools, which range from 12.4% to 26.7%. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 84.54% to 93.43% over the past three school years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools. This high socioeconomic status may be a contributing factor to the school's low academic performance, as research has shown that students from low-income backgrounds often face additional challenges that can impact their educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Teachers more concerned with their contract than their students, reviewing and correcting NJASK questions to show improvement, G&T has more students who have been left back in previous years than actually gifted students and a principal who thinks her school is so great people are trying to sneak in (doesn't realize they are trying to get closer to the babysitte's house). Total lack of dedication vice principal campaigning for city council on the school yard and teachers conducting superintendent attack plans during school hours. Sad. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
