Clifton High School

Summary:

Clifton High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Clifton, New Jersey, with a student population of 3,059. The school has faced several challenges, including consistently ranking in the bottom third of New Jersey high schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, and declining graduation and increasing dropout rates compared to the state average.

Clifton High School's academic performance is a significant concern, with proficiency rates on the NJSLA assessments significantly below state averages across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in 2022-2023, only 34.8% of 9th graders were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 52.1%, and only 12.4% of students were proficient in Algebra I, compared to 19.2% statewide. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching 21.6% in 2021-2022, which is much higher than the state average. Additionally, there are significant achievement gaps between different racial and ethnic subgroups at the school.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Garfield High School, Passaic Valley Regional High School, and schools in the Paterson Public School District, Clifton High School's performance is generally lower, with higher rankings, better test scores, and higher graduation rates. The school's high percentage of students (62.24% in 2022-2023) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch may be a contributing factor to its lower academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
