Pride Academy Charter School

Summary:

Pride Academy Charter School is a middle school located in East Orange, New Jersey, serving 299 students in grades 5-8. The school has a predominantly African American student body, with over 94% of students identifying as such in the 2022-2023 school year. Pride Academy is part of the East Orange School District, which is ranked 320 out of 615 districts in New Jersey and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pride Academy Charter School stands out for its unique student population, with a significantly higher percentage of African American students (94.65%) compared to nearby schools like South Orange Middle School and Edison Middle School, which have more diverse student populations. The school has shown mixed academic performance, with some grades and subjects performing better than the state average, while others lag behind. For example, 7th and 8th-grade students outperformed the state average in English Language Arts, but 5th and 6th-grade students underperformed. In mathematics, the school's performance was below the state average across all grades.

Despite the inconsistent academic performance, Pride Academy Charter School has shown strong performance among specific student subgroups, such as African American students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, often ranking in the top 100 schools in New Jersey for these subgroups. However, the school's chronic absenteeism rate has fluctuated, ranging from a low of 1.8% in 2017-2018 to a high of 10.1% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the state average. Addressing attendance issues and continuing to focus on strengthening instructional practices and supporting traditionally underperforming subgroups could help the school achieve more consistent and improved outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As someone who has volunteered at Pride Academy since it was founded, I can recommend Pride as an excellent school for families who value education and want their child to learn in a nurturing, peaceful, and safe environment. Pride students have a history of high academic growth that has been recognized at a state and national level. This growth has been achieved through the students' hard work, grit, and the encouragement of the whole school community: parents, teachers and the administration.

I have witnessed the teachers and administration spending long hours after school, providing extra support for students, listening to parents' concerns, and working with families as a team. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
