Northwest Elementary School

Summary:

Northwest Elementary School is a public elementary school in Manchester, New Hampshire, serving students from kindergarten to 4th grade. With a diverse student population and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school faces significant challenges, including consistently low academic performance and a high percentage of students from low-income families.

While Northwest Elementary School's overall performance ranks in the bottom quarter of New Hampshire elementary schools, its Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) student subgroups perform relatively better, suggesting the school may be providing targeted support for these populations. Compared to nearby schools like Webster School and Parker-Varney School, Northwest Elementary has a more diverse student body but generally lower academic outcomes.

Over the past three school years, Northwest Elementary has seen a decline in overall enrollment and a shift in its racial composition, with a decrease in the percentage of White students and an increase in students of color. Despite these challenges, the school's diverse population and low student-teacher ratio could be potential assets that the Manchester School District can leverage to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The kindergarten program is appalling. Teachers don't bother to properly assess students, often making them repeat topics they've already mastered in preschool. Teacher supervision of students is minimal. My child was hurt in a gym filled with 2 classes of kindergarteners, a class of 5th graders, and ONE teacher. No one noticed, required a hospital trip for assessment. Parent involvement is DISCOURAGED for anything school related, unless it's a magazine fundraiser. Classroom expectations for kindergartners do not match with their level of development and are detrimental to their development and education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
