Sunset Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Sunset Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school in Omaha, Nebraska, serving 281 students in grades PK-6 and part of the Westside Community Schools district, which is ranked 48 out of 212 districts in the state.

Sunset Hills Elementary consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Nebraska, with students outperforming state and district averages in standardized tests. In 2022-2023, 82-92% of Sunset Hills students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, compared to state averages of 55-63%. However, the school has a predominantly white student population, with 85-86% of students identifying as white over the past 3 years, lower than the more diverse nearby schools like Westgate Elementary and Paddock Road Elementary. Sunset Hills also has a lower percentage of students from low-income families, with 8.5% to 14.1% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, compared to the higher percentages at nearby schools.

Sunset Hills Elementary spends between $13,595 and $14,812 per student, higher than the state average, and has a student-teacher ratio between 14.5 and 16.2, slightly higher than the nearby schools but still within a reasonable range. This consistent funding and staffing, along with the school's focus on academic achievement, have contributed to its status as a high-performing elementary school in the Omaha area, though the differences in racial and socioeconomic diversity compared to nearby schools may warrant further exploration.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great school, horrible district offices., and district policies. This district breaks families up, any chance they get. We moved literally within one mile over the summer because we had to, they had no mercy, our kids got booted out of their classes. The district could care less about keeping families together and care more about op-in kids from outside the district … School is awesome …district needs improvement in this area. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
