Southeast Raleigh High

Summary:

Southeast Raleigh High is a public magnet high school serving grades 9-12 in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a diverse student population of 53.53% African American, 35.62% Hispanic, and 6.07% White students. The school is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 59 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 4-star rating.

Despite the school's diverse student body and higher-than-average funding, Southeast Raleigh High has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina high schools, with significantly lower performance on end-of-course exams compared to the Wake County and North Carolina averages. The school has a high percentage of students from low-income families, with 72.52% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the nearby schools, which range from 26.86% to 49.67%. However, the school's student-teacher ratio of 13.6 is lower than the nearby schools, which range from 13.4 to 26.9 students per teacher.

The data suggests that Southeast Raleigh High faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, socioeconomic status, and racial disparities. While the school has access to resources, it appears to be struggling to effectively utilize them to improve student outcomes. Nearby high-performing schools, such as Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy, Wake Young Men's Leadership Academy, and Enloe High, have significantly higher academic performance and rankings, with more diverse student populations and lower percentages of low-income students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Awful school. People have died here. Drug issues, violence issues, teachers that don't care, useless administration. This school has been a source of confusion and frustration for the last 4 years. Take any logical sense, and throw it out the window. Close Quote

Open Quote Great school for all students. Everyone fits in. Academies allow students to go on interesting field trips for engineering, internet technology, and health sciences. The athletics are great and comprehensive. There are tons of clubs. Staff is dedicated. The fine arts are great. The band travels everywhere and comes back with trophies every time. Students graduate with full-rides to colleges like Princeton, NC State, and Georgia Tech. Lots go to Chapel Hill and other schools too. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
