Leesville Road Middle

Summary:

Leesville Road Middle is a public middle school located in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 791. The school is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 59th out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Leesville Road Middle consistently ranks among the top 20% of middle schools in North Carolina, with performance on state standardized tests (EOG) significantly higher than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subjects. The school's proficiency rates in Math and Reading are 10-20 percentage points above the state and district averages, and its 8th grade Science proficiency rates are around 80% compared to the state average of 70%. Leesville Road Middle also has a more diverse student population compared to many nearby schools, with a racial makeup of 47% White, 30% African American, 14% Hispanic, and 5% Asian. This diversity is a key differentiating factor, as several nearby schools, such as West Cary Middle (38% Asian) and Pine Hollow Middle (63% White), have a more homogeneous student population.

Despite having a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 24% to 37% over the past few years, Leesville Road Middle is still able to maintain its strong academic performance. This is an important finding, as it challenges the common narrative that diverse schools often struggle academically. Leesville Road Middle's consistent excellence, particularly in Math and Science, sets it apart from many of the other traditional public schools in the Raleigh area, including nearby magnet schools like Magellan Charter, which is the top-performing school in the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I've heard great reviews about Leesville until I actually enrolled my child there and have seen otherwise. Extremely disappointed with the school, some of the staff as well as how they handle parent's concerns. The spanish receptionist seems to always have an attitude and is not helpful at all. Going to the principal does not help at all because things are always pushed under the rug. REMOVING MY CHILD FROM THIS SCHOOL. Close Quote

Open Quote The LRMS school has been a huge disappointment. In my opinion the school's quality has declined since the current principal took leadership over a year ago. The quality of education is questionable and extra curricular activities have been watered down. I had high hopes when the current principal came aboard over a year ago but I am sad to say we are hugely disappointed with the leadership team including the assistant principals. The bullying is out of control and the lack of communication between parent, teacher and staff is nearly non- existent. We only receive responses to inquiries after numerous emails and phone calls. We have requested to volunteer and support the school in any capacity. But were only limited to a couple of outside field trips during the entire school year. Parental involvement is clearly not embraced. Our children are honor roll students and excel academically. However, we are pursuing other school options for their education. Close Quote

Open Quote The rankings speak for themselves. I have a brother and step brother that were products of the Leesville Road School system. So when I moved to the area it was a given that I was going to send my son there, and I made it a point to live in that school district. I wish I had done better research. The middle school in particular has declined steadily. While the Assistant Principle's dancing was a nice intro I'm not too sure about the rest. Unapproachable and bitchy comes to mind. My son was afraid of his science teacher. I found out later many students were afraid of this science teacher. They were afraid to ask questions because she would belittle them. His grades started to suffer and decline. I reached out to the principle voicemail and email. Got one return phone call tried again by phone never heard anything else. Yes I reached out to the teachers and they were responsive but they didnt strike me as involved. Come to find out 2 of his teachers were retiring at the end of his sixth grade year. Wonder what kind of involvement there was there. Ironically he begged me to send him to the year round option at the end of 5th grade but I insisted Leesville was the way to go. Now I'm pulling teeth and writing letters trying to get him a transfer to that school. Here's another incident, my son is white, his best friend is black. There was a redneck kid harrasing his friend. He (my son) went to a teacher. The teacher who was black told him to stay away from him that the school year was almost over. It's that general sense of indifference that has struck me. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
