Lead Mine Elementary

Summary:

Lead Mine Elementary is a public elementary school in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 59th out of 242 districts in the state.

While Lead Mine's academic performance is generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages, the school faces some significant challenges. Its students have large disparities in performance, with White students consistently performing well, but African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students struggling and ranking in the bottom 25% of North Carolina elementary schools. The school's overall ranking has also declined over the years, from 293rd out of 1,390 North Carolina elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 750th out of 1,505 in 2023-2024, and its SchoolDigger rating has decreased from 4 stars to 3 stars in recent years. Nearby schools like Jeffreys Grove Elementary and Barton Pond Elementary consistently outperform Lead Mine across multiple academic measures.

With a relatively high percentage of students (50% in 2022-2023) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Lead Mine Elementary may face additional challenges related to socioeconomic disadvantage. Addressing the significant racial achievement gaps and declining school performance will be crucial for Lead Mine to improve its academic outcomes and provide a more equitable education for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Lead Mine is a relatively small school with outstanding teachers and administrators. The K-5 student population is diverse and works very well together. There are many enrichment opportunities and ample remedial support services. The library and other facilities are outstanding, and the technology available is more than adequate. Smaller class sizes would be better, but none of the classes at Lead Mine exceed the state guidelines. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
