As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter is in fifth grade and has attended York Elementary since Kindergarten. The school is nestled in Brookhaven subdivision and has a quaint, neighborhood feel with a very active PTA. My daughter enjoys the focus on STEM education and Problem Based Collaborative Learning. She has had fabulous teachers all 6 years who truly care and challenge her to be her best. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has gone to York since Pre-K and so far our experience has been great. Since she's only gone to one school so far so I don't have anything to compare it to, but she loves school and her teachers. She loves science and reading and is a great reader, and she's always excited about the new projects that they're doing at school. Parent/teacher involvement seems high, there are always family events going on at the school, and the teachers are usually friendly and approachable. My only complaint is that it seems like there are a lot of fundraisers, but that's probably a Wake County thing not a school thing. Seems to me that the school has enough money if they can spend it on things like an advanced weather system for science projects or extra field trips. Of course, that's optional so if you don't like it, don't fundraise.

As for the previous review, we've probably gotten 8 tardies and a few unexcused absences through the year, but I've never experienced anything like what she described. Maybe her tardies were not as spaced out as ours. I also don't know anyone there now who fits her description of the receptionist, and I wonder why she felt the need to mention that the receptionist was "of Latino descent". We also haven't had any issues with re-zoning. Maybe she lives close to a zone boundary line or maybe it's because we haven't moved in the past four years. Close Quote

Open Quote This was the worst elementary school our son had ever been in. The Wake County School system forces you to move year after year even when you don't move due to rezoning and then add in moving and you are at a different school every year so we have experienced quite a few of them. At this school, I actually had the receptionist, a lady of latino descent, come out and tell me as I dropped off my son to school that she would call in a social worker to handle our situation even though we had only been tardy 5 times all year. The teacher we had was nice but very young and did a poor job of educating the kids at this school even though the school's avg. test scores were well lower than other NC schools. This was 4 years ago but still disturbed by it. We did not go back the next year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
